Trekking Talassemtane National Park in the Rif Mountains
The Rif Mountains may not have the high peaks of the Toubkal region or the dramatic gorges of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, but it contains one of the unique fir forest of fir trees existing only in this part of Africa. Mountain Lakrra 2159m over gorgeous views over the national park of Talassemtane and the Rif Mountains.
The best time to visit the Rif is during the spring from late March through June. The summer months from July to mid-august can get unpleasantly hot during the day and the winter months from December to February can be cold. Weather from August to October is also excellent period
The base for exploring the Rif Mountains is Chefchaouen. Chefchaouen name is Berber word which means “look at the peaks.” The peaks meant here are Mountain Tissouka 2000m and Mountain El Kellaa 1800m where Chefchaouen is located.

Trekking in the region can take you to remote corners of the national natural park of Talassemtane, part of the Mediterranean intercontinental biosphere reserve.
Located in the eastern portion of the Limestone Ridge of the Rif, the Talassemtane National Park was created in October 2004. It covers an area of 58,950 ha, a very original territory that is characterized by its unique biodiversity and landscapes. With its rugged terrain characterizing the Rif mountains, the Talassemtane National Park offers natural landscapes of great heritage value throughout the Mediterranean. It encompasses deep valleys excavated by torrential wadis, gorges with impressive cliffs and abundant caves.
The Talassemtane National Park is home to a large number of remarkable plant species: the endemic Moroccan fir, as well as Atlas cedar and black pine. La Sapinière, Fir forest is the most original forest.
Talassemtane is also home to some forty mammals, the most notable of which are the barbary macaques and the Otter. More than 100 bird species, including rare raptors (Golden Eagle and Bearded Vulture), are observed at the site. Reptiles and amphibians are also represented by around thirty species
Cultural resources, combined with natural potential, offer the Talassemtane National Park an ecotourism potential of national and Mediterranean importance. It is officially part of the Transcontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (Morocco - Spain)
CROSSING TALASSEMTANE NATURAL PARK

Transfer from airport / port of Tangier or any other city to Chefchaouen. Guided visit of the Medina. Dinner and overnight in a charming Riad in the medina.
We begin the trek accompanied by a local guide and mule. During the hike we observe striking nature as well as Jbala daily life. The trek lasts 4 hours. We reach Talassemtane guesthouse and we will have a typical lunch with a rural family. Afterwards you are invited to learn local cuisine. Habte family will share with you their knowledge and traditions. Then, we walk through the villager and visit marabou Abdelah Habte, an influential religious figure that had much impact on the inhabitant at a certain era in the province of Chefchaouen. The following day you will enjoy a local breakfast consisted of local product. Then we start our hike to Mount Lakraa 2159m. We go down to Plaça d’espagne, an air of relaxation and observation by excellence in a fir forest. The trek lasts around 7 hours. Picnic lunch will be under the fir trees. Transfer by land rover to Taourarte village where we spend the night in half board accommodation with a rural family.
Breakfast early in the morning, next we continue our expedition in the Park through a remarkable vegetation. Our hike lasts 4 hours. Breakfast at the gite and then we hike back to Chefchaouen through Kella village, known for its old granaries and its tilted and very old mosque. After 7 hours we arrive to Chefchaouen. Half board accommodation in a charming guest house in Chefchaouen medina
